That was way closer than it should of been. I guess that is the difference between us and some of the 'other' teams. We just aren't putting the games away, just like with the Brighton game. It is a victory though and it is always hard to argue with 3 points. It was could to see ManUre go to the Britannia and get prison raped as well. I thought Stoke City took it to them though and were definitely deserving of their point. It makes me think bringing back Crouchy (yes I realize he is older) may have been a better investment than Carroll. More on that later. Here are my ratings, feel free to disagree.
Reina - 6 - A few nervy moments again, but overall a solid performance. Could have gotten a better punch for Wolves' goal and dealt with the crosses better. No chance on the goal.
Kelly - 6 - Much better than his Brighton display. Looked more like the Kelly that was capped and less like Konchesky.
Carragher - 6 - Could have been better, but he is getting old. I thought he held the back line together well when Wolves were piling on the pressure (isn't that a sad statement).
Skrtel - 6 - Nothing wrong that I can remember. Had a nice marauding run down the center of the pitch and then flopped for the foul. I guess no one thought he could do that. I know I certainly didn't.
Enrique - 7 - Quiet first half, but got more involved in the attack as things went on. Unlucky bounce for Wolves' goal. He is very important to the attack it seems and needs to get forward. He has turned out to be arguably our best signing of the window in terms of value and need.
Downing - 7 - Very quiet start, but grew into the game and by the end was tearing down the flanks. Plays really well with Enrique when he can actually get involved in the game. Should have scored though.
Lucas - 6 - A decent performance, but not a standout display. He put in his usually timely challenges, but didn't seem to get a hold of the center of the pitch as well as we have seen recently. Got caught ball watching on the goal though.
Adam - 6 - Eh, an errant shot deflected in. He was ok, but just as with Lucas, I don't feel as if they had complete control of the midfield like they should against a side like Wolves.
Henderson - 5 - Lost again (like a broken record). I don't know why, but he really is having a hard time finding himself here. Luckily we can win without him, but I keep waiting for him to have a truly breakout game. I really don't remember him touching the ball other than snapping a wild shot off a rebound outside the box when he should have controlled it and crossed it back in.
Suarez - 9 - ...I just can't get enough, I just can't get enough... He was everywhere and was unlucky not to have more. His first was amazing patience until the shot opened up and then slotted it in with the narrowest of angles. Thank God no one else was seriously pursuing him last January. I don't know where we would be without him, but it is scary to think about. I like that he was upset about coming off.
Carroll - 6 - Not good, but better. He is still far to static and reactionary for my liking. He was doing a better job of linking up play and making a few flicks on, but he is still far from the 35m man that we have been hoping for. As I said before, I just don't see how he fits into a pass and move side. He is brute force and would be much better on a side like Stoke. I realize he is young, but he is going to have start performing soon or we might need to figure out how to minimize our losses.
Gerrard - 6 - Decent cameo. Seems like he still has it in him, he just needs to get his match fitness back. I can't wait to see him linking up with Suarez.
Kuyt - 6 - Was better than Henderson. I think we might start to see him replace Henderson soon if Hendo doesn't pick it up. He does need to play more often against the bigger clubs as he provides a lot of protection down the right side.
So again, what do we do with Carroll? I really don't know, but at this point I think we can all agree that we would prefer to see Bellamy on the pitch with Suarez. Crouch has the ability to pull the ball out of the air and do some gangly stepovers to make space. Carroll probably should have been a rugby player. The team was constructed to feed his forehead, but he has to make space for himself in order to actually get an open header. This is done through movement off the ball, but it is something he seems to be lacking right now. The thing is, we brought in one of the best crossers in the EPL this off season and it seems as though he has adapted to play off of Suarez better than he has with Carroll and it is working. So really what it boils down to is that if Carroll can't be effective against the lower tier sides (no disrespect to Wolves) then how can we possibly expect him to produce against ManUre and Chel$ki? Oh well, I guess we will just have to wait and see if he breaks out or continues to linger. Only time will tell.
