It’s not a new thing for a Liverpool fan to love, worship, and respect Kenny Dalglish. It’s another thing, if the Liverpool fan is a 31 year old New York based Liverpool fan. Followers of my blogs will know how much I campaigned for the man to come back as manager, and how many youtube videos I have of him as a player. While I would love to say I saw him as a player, I’m too damn young to witness the magic. But he’s for sure my favorite. So people wonder what my reason is for loving a player/manager I didn’t have the pleasure in seeing. Well, this will explain it once and for all.
What is it about him that makes me smile? It’s not a specific goal, play, or game, it’s something Liverpool fans all respect him for, Hillsborough. I don’t need to go in depth with you guys about it, but the role he took, and the team took during that tough time was so commendable. Yes, it’s part of what drove him to leave the club after the first spell. The emotional toll it took on him is something you can still see today. We all know the steps he took, the passages he wrong in his books about the memorials, and for that he’s always going to be loved. He even reportedly turned down Sheffield United because of this.
Being an American, and having worked in sport like I have, I’m so numb to players not caring, looking out for themselves and just being pampered babies. So his continued actions with the Hillsborough Disaster, and his caring for the families is something to be commended. At the 20th anniversary he broke his silence on the topic, which had to be very hard for him.
